Work! Work! Work!

July 5th
Hope everyone had a safe and happy 4th. Today is Workaholics Day. I believe this day should be used, not to work again, but to fight the workaholic in you, to not work at all. Fight it, Fight it….Sit on the sofa and do NOTHING! What ever you do, don’t watch the movie The Box…It will make you want to go back to work, even before it is over.

Happy Birthday, dear…

…Huey! Hugh Anthony Craig  III (aka Huey Lewis) was born in NYC in 1950. My favorite songs he and his band The News do include the ones featured in Back to the Future and Workin’ for a Livin’…Have you seen the remake video with Garth Brooks?

…Henry! Henry Cabot Lodge Jr was born in Massachusetts in 1902. He served as a US senator from Mass for 2 different terms (the second time he was unseated by JFK) and was appointed as Ambassador to the UN, Viet Nam and West Germany (at different times).

…Cecil! Cecil John Rhodes was born in England in 1853. Although he was a business man and politician, most Americans will recognize that he founded DeBeers, the diamong company AND his Rhodes University in South Africa, He also set up the Rhodes Scholarship fund.

…Phineas! Phineas Taylor Barnum (aka PT Barnum) was born in 1810 in Bethel, (hey, I have ancestors from around there…wonder if we are cousins). Although he is mostly known for his circus, he was elected to serve in the Connecticut legislature and was the Mayor of Bridgeport, CT. He said: “A human soul is not to be trifled with. It may inhabit the body of a Chinaman, a Turk, an Arab or a Hotentot – it is stil an immortal spirit!”

Ready  for your History Lesson?

1954- The rock and roll revolution was born. Elvis Presley recorded That’s All Right at Sun Records.
1946- The Bikini was created and introduced by Louis Reard.
1921- Shoeless Joe Jackson, Buck Weaver, Eddie Cicotte and the rest of the Chicago White Sox were accused of “throwing” the 1919 World Series. They would forever be known as the “Black Sox” and would be banned from baseball. For more info see the movie Eight Men Out starring John Cusak and DB Sweeney.
1865- William and Catherine Booth founded Christian Mission in London. After some rough times and treatment, in 1878, they renamed themselves the Salvation Army.
