1943 – PT-109 was sunk when a Japanese destroyer rammed it. A 5 hour ‘swim’ to an island, then to another island, then a coconut shell message sent via South Pacific natives 11 of the 13 crewmen were rescued, including Lieutenant John F. Kennedy. 1779 – The Star Spangled Banner poet, Francis Scott Key was born in Carroll County, MD. Did you know he was a lawyer and is the grandfather of F.Scott Fitzgerald?
1774 – Joseph Priestly, a British minister, discovered oxygen was born. He also invented soda water and contributed to the founding of Unitarianism in England.
1770 – Partner of Meriwether Lewis, explorer, William Clark was born in Caroline County, VA. He was also the Governor of Missouri Territory (1813-1820).
1498 – Christopher Columbus landed on the Paria Peninsula (Venezuela) South America.
