May 16th

Love a Tree Day Other than planting a new tree or watering an old one, that is the extent that my luvin’ will go…I hope not to see anyone going beyond that either.
National Sea Monkey Day – Riddle me this people…What in the world are sea monkeys any way? I see them sold in stores and they show little monkeys in the water but I am not stupid, I know a monkey cannot live in the water. If you know, PLEASE, fill me in! What am I missing??
Wear Purple for Peace Day – Apparently, not to stop (a) war directly to not have war, but to encourage alien life to seek out our lovely planet (as a vacation destination? Hmmm) I personally will wear purple to stop war. War sucks for everyone. No one ever wins, at least until there is no war anymore, then we ALL win.

Births, Deaths  and the Pursuit of Life…
Marrying young was all the rage in 1770, Marie Antoinette (14) married Louis-Auguste (15) he would become king a week before his 19th birthday…The Brainchild behind the purchase of Alaska, William Seward was born in 1801…And, just FOR MOM…Hires Root Beer is invented by Charles Hires in 1866.

Late great, tender and sweet Henry Fonda was born in 1905. See a Fonda flick like Grapes of Wrath, Young Mr Lincoln , 12 Angry Men, Yours, Mine and Ours, or On Golden Pond….Liberace, slightly introverted (not) pianist was born in 1919…Also slightly introverted baseball player and manager, Billy Martin was born in 1928…In 1929, Adrienne Rich was born, although her bio describes her as “one of the most widely read and influential poets of the second half of the twentieth century” I have never heard of her or the listed works…
1953 brought us hunky Pierce Brosnan, known to most as “Bond, James Bond” I like to remember him as “Steele, Remington Steele”… Author of The African Queen, The Night of the Hunter, and A Death in The Family, James Agee, died on this day in 1955… Olga Korbut, fantabulous Russian gymnast was born in 1955…Also in 1955, Debra Winger, appeared to her family (and the world) for the first time. If you are unaware, she is an actress celebrated for rolls in Terms of Endearment and An Officer and a Gentleman…1957-Eliot Ness passed away…

Janet Jackson was born on this day in 1966, she’s the baby of the Jackson clan…One of my current on TV actors, David Boreanaz (Bones) was born in 1971. He apparently also played an antihero in Buffy, the Vampire Slayer and Angel TV series, which I have never seen… In 1973, Tori Spelling of BevHills 90210, was born.

1984…We said goodbye to Andy Kaufman, funnyman known for his role as Latka in Taxi and Irwin Shaw, prolific writer of classics such as The Young Lions, Rich Man, Poor Man, In the Company of Dolphins, Beggarman, Thief, …1985 Margaret Hamilton finally succumbed to a bucket of water and left us for Oz. Please remember her other 112 credits…1990 brought 2 memorable deaths including creative Jim Henson (we will forever remember his hand) and “The Candyman”, Sammy Davis Jr.
