HISTORY CLASS
  • 1841 -- President William Henry Harrison died of pneumonia, just one month after taking the oath of office. 
  • 1865 -- President Lincoln Dreams of assassination. On April 11th, President Lincoln revealed to a friend a dream that had been bothering him. Mourners were sobbing around a corpse in the East Room of the White House. Mr. Lincoln asked a guard on duty, "Who is dead in the White House?" The soldier replied, The President. He was shot by an assassin." At which point, the president abruptly awoke. Three days later, President Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater. 
  • 1887 -- Susanna Medora Salter became the first female elected to any  office in the United States. She was elected Mayor in the town of Argonia, Kansas with a population of just under 500. 
  • 1933 -- Dirigible Akron crashed into the ocean during take off in unstable weather killing 73.
  • 1949 -- NATO is signed. Members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization agreed to mutual defence of each other in response to an attack from an outside party. 
  • 1968 -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr was assassinated in Memphis, TN. James Earl Ray was accused and confessed to the dastardly deed.



BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS
  • 1843-William Jackson, Painter/Photograper. Best known for his work in western photography.
  • 1895-Arthur Murray, Dance Instructor. Famous in his own right for his teachings, you should know he was taught and worked with Vernon and Irene Castle. 
  • 1906-John Cameron Swayze. Newsman. He worked for all three major news networks (Way back in the olden times, there were only 3 television stations) at some point in time in his life. Some older younger folks may remember him hocking Timex watches (They take a licking and keep on ticking.)
  • 1915-Muddy Waters, Singer. Honestly, before today, I thought Muddy Waters was a band. I have never heard of the songs he is credited with but like the title I'm Your Hoochie-Cootchie Man the best.
  • 1924 -Gil Hodges, Athlete. He played first base for the Brooklyn & Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Mets. He was a manager for New York Mets and the Washington Senators. 
  • 1926-Cloris Leachman, Actress.  You probably remember her as Phyllis on Mary Tyler Moore Show, and Phyllis. Or maybe just Dancing with the Stars. She also has a long list of movie and television guest appearances including, Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, The Last Picture Show and The People Next Door.
  • 1928-Maya Angelou, Writer. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is one of 6 autobiographical novels she has penned. 
  • 1932-Anthony Perkins Actor. Psycho. Need I say more?
  • 1946-Craig T. Nelson, Actor. Most noted for his role as "Coach" in the sitcom Coach.
  • 1950-Christine Lahti, Actress. ...And Justice For All, Chicago Hope.
  • 1965-Robert Downey, Jr, Actor. Chaplin, Air America, Ally McBeal, IronMan.
  • 1966-Nancy McKeon, Actress. Although she has done numerous movies she will always be Jo from long running sitcom, Facts of Life.
  • 1973-David Blaine, Illusionist. Think Houdini and then think freakier. 
  • 1979-Heath Ledger, Actor. I wish he had been able to explore his romantic comedy side a little more before his untimely death.
