International Juggler’s Day, Newspaper Columnists Day

HISTORY
1775- The Ride of Paul Revere & William Dawes. The ride was intended to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock that British troops were on the move to arrest them and confiscate the arsenal at Concord.
1906- The Great San Francisco Earthquake; 3,000 killed. 5:13AM, 8.0 on the Richter scale. Although the earthquake was horrible, most devistation was caused by the city wide fires. 3,000 killed, nearly 30,000 buildings destroyed.
1945- Ernie Pyle was killed. Pyle was a journalist reporting on the war. He was kille on the island of le Shima by Japanese machine gun fire. The Story of GI Joe (1945) Burgess Meredith portrayed him.
1956- Marriage of Monaco’s Prince Rainier to America’s (movie sweetheart) Grace Kelly.
1958- Ezra Pound was released from St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. He was arrested in Italy on charges of treason during WWII. After a stay in a prison camp near Pisa he was returned to US and declared insane.
1983- US Embassy in Beirut is destroyed by a suicide bomber. 17 Americans were killed along with 55 others.

1963- Conan O’Brien, comedic host. Tonight Show, Late Night.
1956- Eric Roberts, actor.  King of the Gypsies; Runaway Train; Less Than Perfect; Heroes.
1947- James Woods, actor. Hickey and Boggs; The Way We Were; Ghosts of Mississippi; John Q.
1946- Hayley Mills, actress. Pollyanna; The Parent Trap; The Moon-Spinners; Wild at Heart.
1882- Leopold Stokowski, conductor. Founded: NYC Symphony, All-American Youth Orchestra; Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra, American Symphony Orchestra.
1957- Clarence Darrow, attorney. Defended Leopold & Loeb (accused of killing 14 year old Bobby Franks); Defended John T Scopes for teaching evolution in the classroom). It seems Spencer Tracy did a fine job portraying him in Inherit the Wind.
