April 5th

HAPPY DYNGUS DAY
AND GO FOR BROKE DAY!!!
I believe that these two celebrations work well together. Go For Broke Day is self explanitory, however, Dyngus Day is a little known Polish celebration, held on the Monday after Easter each year,  in which the gentlemen of a community are free to sprinkle or completely drench the ladies the know, or wish to know. Occasionally, they put down the water and pick up switches or pussy willow branches and gently (hopefully) smack the ladies' legs. (For More Information, See Tomorrows Installment)

HISTORY CLASS
  • In order to preserve peace between Powhattan's tribe and English settlers, Pocahantas and John Rolfe married on this day in 1614. Happy 396th Anniversary! What is the traditional gift for this anniversary, anyway?
  • An Open Letter to Lord North was published in the London paper The Public Advertiser on April 5, 1774. Written by Benjamin Franklin, he jokingly suggested that the Prime Minster of Britain enforce Marshall Law in the colonies...which he did in Massachusetts. Thanks Ben!
  • Charles Darwin sent the first three chapters of The Origin of the Species to his publisher on this day in 1859. His 5-year journey on the HMS Beagle began in November of 1832.
  • In 1951, the Ethel & Julius Rosenberg were sentenced to death for spying for the Soviet Union.
  • In 1976, Howard Hughes died. Hughes' life can be learned about through many channels including several movies...Melvin & Howard and The Aviator amongst them.
  • Suicide takes the life of Curt Kobain. I think he is most famous for committing suicide than for anything he did in his life.
  • In 2008, Moses, Ben-Hur, Marc Antony, Major Benson, El Cid, John the Baptist, Michelangelo, Will Penny, Robert Neville, George Taylor, Alan Murdock, Henry VIII, Jason Colby, Sir Thomas More, Long John Silver, Sherlock Holmes, Abraham Lincoln, etc died in the embodiment of Charlton Heston.

I will do my best to review this comment and add it as soon as possible. Sorry, but if it is mean, crude, disgusting or irrelevant I can't post it. Remember we are supposed to be celebrating not dragging people down.
