Pigs and Stars

1916  Easter Rebellion Began, Irish nationalists led by Patrick Pearse rebel against British rule.
1800  Library of Congress established by John Adams with an appropriation of $5,000. The first home of the LOC was the US Capitol and consisted of 964 volumes and 9 maps. 12 years later, 3,000 volumes at the library were burned by the British Army during the War of 1812.
1940  “Alphabet” Mystery Novelist, Sue Grafton, was born in Louisville, Kentucky.
1945  Harry Truman is briefed on the details of scientific research into the atomic bomb called “The Manhattan Project”.
1947  Willa Cather, Virginia born Author, died in New York. Her second Each of her novels dealt with families and the frontier west including Alexander’s Bridge, O Pioneers! And My Antonia.
1953  Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II of Britain.
1980  In an attempt to free 52 Americans held hostage in Tehran, Iran for over 6 months, 8 service men lost their lives with no hostages rescued.
1982  Jane Fonda releases her first workout video.
1990  The Hubble Telescope was launched today giving us twenty years of beautiful outer space portraits. With many hurdles to leap over, the telescope project has exceeded designer’s expectations by doubling (so far) its life span, Hubble’s mission was expected to last up there for 10 years.
