1815- Tambora, a volcano on the island of Sumbawa in Indonisia erupted. Dormant for thousands of years, several eruptions beginning on April 10th. Debris from explosions cause a moderate tsunami. Ash spewed into the air 20 miles and so thick the sun was blotted out for several days and effected the weather, including lower temperatures for the next year, creating snow and frost in New England during June and July that summer, and spectacular sunsets throughout the world. Ten thousand people were killed by the eruption and more than 80,000 people died in the surrounding area when crops failed and they were starved to death. The volcano, which stood at approximately 14,000feet, was reduced to about 9,000 feet after the event.
