East Meets West Day and World Penguin Day
HISTORY
1719 Daniel Defoe had his ‘based-on-a-true-story’ novel The Life and Strange Adventures of Robinson Crusoe published.
1831 The Lion of the West opened at the Park Theater in NYC. The story followed the life (with artistic license applied) of Davy Crockett.
1859 Suez Canal construction began. The 101 mile canal crosses the isthmus to connect the Mediterranean and Red Seas.
1945 New UN forms with 45 Countries meeting in San Francisco.
1947 A two-lane bowling alley constructed earlier in the year was inaugurated by Harry Truman, beer and pretzels came later.
1983 The USSR released a letter that Russian Leader, Yuri Andropov sent to an American girl, Samantha Smith, 5th grader from Maine, who asked the ‘Cold War’ leader if they were going to start a nuclear war with the US. He assured her something that US leaders were not so sure of…that they wished to live in peace on the planet. He invited her to visit, which she (and her parents) did. 14 months later, Andropov died of kidney failure, and 18 months after that (August, 1985) at the age of 13, Samantha Smith died in a plane crash.
1989 James Richardson was released from prison. It turns out, he did not kill his 7 children as the prosecutor claimed and manipulated evidence to prove it. Even after the neighbor said she killed the little ones by poisoning their rice and beans, even after checking her background, which included being on parole for killing her second husband and being a suspect in the poisoning murder of her first husband.
1990 The Hubble Telescope is placed in Earth’s orbit by the space shuttle Discovery.
1995 Golden Toes Ginger Rogers died.
