1775 Revolutionary War began. British Major John Pitcairn ordered Americans to disburse from the town commons in Lexington, MA and, as they turned to leave, “The Shot Heard Around the World” was fired. Was the war started by accident? Americans: 8 killed, 10 injured. English: 1 injured.
1809 Jefferson sells indentured servant, John Freeman, to Madison. An indentured servant frequently were impoverished white men who sold themselves in exchange for room and board (and sometimes wages). The subject of the Jefferson/Madison sale, however, was probably a negro with skills as a carpenter or ironworker.
1824 Lord Byron, Poet. Died in Greece while aiding the country in their bid for independence from Turkey. He did not, however, die in battle, probably died of sepsis after being treated with leeches fro a cold. (Don't ask me, I don't get it)
1865 Lincoln’s Funeral. He is buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Ill.
1876 After an April 2nd fist fight with his bosses opponent for city marshal, Wyatt Earp was fired, er, um, let go from the police force of Wichita, Kansas for his violent tendancies. His boss won the election by the way.
1897 Boston Marathon I. With a time of 2hours 55 minutes and 10 seconds, John J McDermott of the Pastime Athletic Club of New York City won.
1964 Mario Andretti races in first Indy Car Race. He finished in 11th at the Trenton, NJ track.
1975 The Captain and Tennille song “Love Will Keep Us Together” hit the pop charts and climbed like crazy.
1993 Branch Dividian compound goes up in flames after 51 day standoff with FBI. 76 members were killed.
1995 Murrah Building in Oklahoma City, OK was blown up by Timothy McVeigh. 168 people were killed.
