On this day in...
1667- John Milton, blind, impoverished and jobless, sells his newest poem, Paradise Lost (along with the copyright) for £10.
1773- British Parliament passed the Tea Act, raising taxes to the colonists in the US to save its East India Company sparking the December “Boston Tea Party” aboard the British ships Dartmouth, Eleanor and Beaver.
1813- Zebulon Pike, original explorer of a large tower in Colorado (now named Pike’s Peak) the 34 year old Brigadier General died during the War of 1812 on this day.
1865- The war is over. Union soldiers want to get home. The Captain of the Mississippi Steamboat Sultana decided to cash in on the governments offer of $5for enlisted and $10 for officers returned to the North.  Unfortunately, the already limping (due to boiler issues) boat with a capacity of 376 could not handle the 2200 people on board. The boiler exploded. Not all that were thrown into the water by the blast could fit onto the one lifeboat. This disaster killed 1,700 and wounding countless others making this the largest maritime disaster in US history.
1937-First Social Security Checks issued.
1956- World Heavyweight Champion, Rocco Francis “Rocky” Marchegiano (Marciano) retired from Boxing.
1963- I Will Follow Him, by Peggy March, 15 year old high school freshman, hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
1968- Vice President Hubert H Humphrey threw his hat into the presidential candidacy ring 3 weeks after President Lyndon B Johnson announced his NON Candidacy.
1978- President Sardar Mohammed Daoud is over thrown and murdered in Afghanistan beginning its Communist ruling by Nur Mohammed Taraki.
